Whoa...Dream Big!

Ellen Page has announced her next project and it's a literary classic. Jane Eyre to be exact. That's just..I don't know. I understand the need to follow up an Oscar winning performance with some different roles to show your range but...yeah. She seems too manly? (is that the right word) too acerbic? Your thoughts?

And here is the rest of it.

I sincerely apologize for the multiple comments. The Blogger system kept mangling the HTML code (even when it looked okay in the preview mode), and I eventually gave up.

Here's the correct, link-free version of my response:

Hmmm... I defintiely see your point -- most folks who had a strong opinion about Juno (positive or not) are most likely stuck with this impression of Page as this surly, withdrawn, wisecracking teen.

Yes, it's a compelling image, and one wholly at odds with the prim "ladylike" demeanor one might associate with a narrative like Jane Eyre. But ultimately, Page is *not* Juno. And her "acerbic-ness" or "manliness" is an extension of her acting skills, not some immutable, fundamental quality. It might be what makes her appealing, but it's not the be-all, end-all of who she is.

If real-life people can be sent to "charm schools" or John Robert Powers style behavior training, surely an Oscar-quality actress can put on the haughty airs needed to pull off a Jane Austen role. (One hopes!)

Besides, as far as I know, her next project *is* rather Juno-esque. It's called Whip It!, and it's Drew Barrymore's first movie as director. It's loosely based on Derby Girl, a Young Adult novel by Shauna Cross.

This is how IMDB describes the plot: "In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin." So yes, it's hardly Merchant-Ivory fare, but will probably cater to her strength's better than Jane Eyre.
